Hidden Symbols

The central idea of this project is the usage of hidden symbols in each painting to create an ulterior meaning which can be found by thinking outside the box and reading into the piece. To create these symbols I used bright colors and impasto paint to exaggerate and explore the hidden symbols and give the effect of the symbols being more substantial in the piece than they actually are. In image four I used an old bowl filled with fruit. The banana and lemon were used to bring the viewer’s eyes into the bowl where they would see they grapes which symbolize details being hidden by history and how even big ideas or movements, which are symbolized by the apple, could be hidden by history. Then by attaching the triangles to each corner, I was able to guide the eye from the corners to the center of the piece. In image nine I was able to also make it seem like someone is looking in on a scene in a room with red drapes. The heavy brushstrokes guide the viewer’s eyes back to them empty doorway which shows how the future is unknown to everyone until it actually happens no matter how much we want to know and change it. In image six the vague face is there to show how everyone has hidden parts of their lives and no matter what we won’t always know about them or understand them. It was though my impasto technique that I was able to explore these symbols and give them true meanings.
