Biography

The Photographer, MerlinT. Lee, 2018

Hello! I am an artist and designer currently based in Louisville, Kentucky. I began my training as an artist at a young age and every time I tried to get away from it, I somehow ended up back in art and design. I am a product of the renown Ballard visual arts program in Louisville, Kentucky, where I participated in the Scholastic Art and Writing competition. In the Scholastics, I was awarded a Gold Key for my sculpture Mod Village, a Silver Key for my portfolio The Burbs, and an Honorable Mention for my painting Coming Alive. I completed my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Digital Art and Interactive Media at Indiana University in Spring of 2020. Following this training, I continued art making on the side while working in Advertising.

My big break as an artist (literally) happened in 2012 when I was an assistant for the Arts Mural at Waggener High School in Louisville, Kentucky. This work brought in elements of all art forms and bright colors to inspire the students to create. It also covers the side of one wing of the building on the first floor which is about 200′ x 12′. I also have worked on several other projects like the book Engaging Compassion: Through Intent and Action in 2014 where I was the head designer and artist. In this capacity, I came up with the layout of the book, as well as created the illustrations contained in the book. Once the book was ready to come out I also worked on the majority of the early marketing materials. As well, I was the sole designer and artist for the book A Constellation of Connections: Contemplative Relationships which was released in 2016.

My artistic style comes from a variety of influences. These influences include Bruce Nauman, Cindy Sherman, Robert Mapplethorpe, Louise Bourgeois, Yasumasa Morimura, and other various artists. Together these various artists have influenced my style of incorporating texture into my pieces and using light to my advantage to create new interesting pieces. I try and incorporate as many different senses as possible when I create my pieces which make the pieces more interesting. My goal is to incorporate texture and light to improve people’s experience with my art.

I would like to thank you for taking the time to view my art and if you have any questions or would like to order prints of any work please email me.
